Erwin Panofsky was a German Jewish art historian. He emigrated to the United States in the 1930s and subsequently taught at New York University, Princeton University, and Harvard University. Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968), a native of Hanover, Germany, grew up in Berlin where he received a classical education at the Joachimsthallsches Gymnasium. He then studied at the universities of Berlin, Munich and Freiburg/Breslau. After earning a Ph.
