Erwin Panofsky was a German Jewish art historian. He emigrated to the United States in the 1930s and subsequently taught at New York University, Princeton University, and Harvard University. He became widely known and very influential in the field of iconography. One of his most popular works is Studies in Iconology: Humanist Themes in the Art of the Renaissance (1939, reissued 1972). Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968), a native of Hanover, Germany, grew up in Berlin where he received a classical education at the Joachimsthallsches Gymnasium. He then studied at the universities of Berlin, Munich and Freiburg/Breslau. After earning a Ph.
